Bridge Tips - Bidding, No. 6 - Suit Agreement After Partner Opens a Strong
Two
Your partner opens a strong Acol 2♥. What do you respond with the following
hand, and what do you then bid if partner bids 4NT simple Blackwood?
♠ Kxx
♥ KJxx ♦ Qxxx ♣ xx
4♥. Using Standard Acol, this
shows a decent raise to four and DENIES an Ace. Since you have denied an Ace,
you respond to partner’s Blackwood bid by showing your two kings – 5♥.
♠ Axx
♥ Kxxx ♦ xxxx ♣ Ax,
although it is an excellent hand and you certainly have a contract of 4♥
or higher, you should only bid 3♥. This is forcing but doesn’t deny an Ace,
so in reply to partner’s Blackwood enquiry, you should show your two Aces.
